British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
