Magnitude of Illegal Activities
Such illegal activities included over 29bn yuan (over four billion dollars; £3.1bn). They also led to the fatalities of six from China citizens, the suicide of an individual and numerous harm, reports reported.
The severe sentences issued by the court are a component of China's initiative to remove the vast fraud rings in South East Asia - and deliver a firm warning to other illegal organizations.
Background of the Clans
Such families became dominant in the early 2000s with the support of a prominent figure - who currently heads Myanmar's military government. The leader had intended to bolster partners in the town after ousting its earlier ruler.
Among the families, the Bais were "the top", the son earlier informed state media.
Back then, our Bai family was the dominant in both the government and armed arenas," he said in a documentary about the Bai family, aired on official channels in July.
Within that report, a individual at one of fraud facilities narrated the abuse he had endured at the location: besides being hit, he had his nails removed with tools and two of his digits severed with a kitchen knife.
More Allegations
The son is included in those who were sentenced to death in the latest ruling. He has also been independently sentenced of planning to smuggle and make 11 tonnes of illegal drugs, reports announced.
Decline of the Families
The families' downfall happened in recent times as situations altered.
For years Chinese authorities has pressed the regime to limit scam activities in the area.
In 2023, the authorities released arrest warrants for the most prominent figures of such families.
Bai Suocheng, the clan's patriarch, was included in the individuals who were extradited to China from the country in recent months.
For what reason is the state making so much effort to pursue the four families?" a Chinese investigator commented in the July report.
The purpose is to caution individuals, no matter your position, your base, as long as you engage in such heinous offenses affecting the citizens, you will be held accountable."
