Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
