New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
